    Contra Costa Bar Association

    Tuesday, April 9, 12:00 pm – 2:15 pm

After a brief introduction by Judge Sugiyama, the presentation will be directed at probate practitioners as a refresher on jury trial practice and procedure, with an eye toward those topics considered most important by the court.

Two experienced trial lawyers offer this primer on state court civil jury trials directed to probate litigators with little or no jury trial experience. We will cover the basics: jury (de-)selection, voir dire, peremptory and for-cause challenges, jury instructions, opening statements, effective use of demonstrative exhibits, closing arguments, and more.

The legal landscape for California employers continues to grow more difficult and dangerous by the day, in part because of new anti-harassment training requirements, changes to the minimum wage, as well as additional accommodation duties. Staying up-to-date on the ever changing landscape of California employment law is almost impossible. This presentation will highlight the key changes that took place in the last quarter of 2018 and the most significant labor and employment laws that went into effect on January 1, 2019.

"Perhaps nothing has affected how IP is protected and enforced more than the advent of the Internet. All lawyers undoubtedly benefit from the ease the Internet affords, but IP litigators in particular have a simultaneously beneficial and challenging relationship with online enforcement. Almost every claim that an IP litigator investigates involves the Internet, be it a competitor infringing a client’s trademark on a social media page, a user uploading a copyrighted movie to a file-sharing website, or counterfeit consumer goods being imported from overseas."
