"California saw a similar financial benefit when it ran a statewide amnesty program from October 2015 to April 2017. The Judicial Council of California reported that over a quarter of a million cases were resolved via payment plans, creating a $45.1 million windfall."

"Although it often flies under the radar, court costs and fees have grown rapidly in the past 10 years, according to research from the Brennan Center and the National Center for State Courts, and they can add up quickly for anyone who comes into contact with any court system. Many people simply can’t afford to pay them, which can wreak havoc on their lives."

"According to court surveys, three-quarters of all civil cases have at least one side unrepresented, and only 10% of family law and eviction disputes have lawyers on both sides. Unlike criminal defendants, the law does not entitle civil litigants to an attorney.

In response, the courts have expanded self-help services. After years of lobbying by judicial leaders, the state last year nearly tripled funding for self-help programs to $30 million."

"Growing up, San Francisco native Justice Therese Stewart never imagined she would one day lead the city in its legal battles for marriage equality. Nor did she know that in 1999, she would serve as the first openly gay president of the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF)."

Uptrust’s work is relatively simple: It establishes a channel through which public defenders and the people they represent can communicate, and it texts reminders to the defendants about when they need to be in court. The company has noted a decrease in failure-to-appear violations in the places it’s launched, which should help defendants avoid unnecessary jail time and save counties money they would otherwise spend on the jailings.
