    Description:

When trademarking a name or nickname, there are additional requirements and limitations on when and how somebody can receive mark registration. Nowhere is this more commonly an issue than in entertainment law.  Some of the more famous recent instances of this issue have involved the Kardashians, Johnny Manziel (Johnny Football), and Johnny Gadreau of the Calgary Flames (trademarking Johnny Hockey). This webinar will cover trademarking names, nicknames, and pseudonyms in the entertainment industry. It’s a brief review of the current law, industry pitfalls and issues, and how rights of publicity supplement trademark rights in this area.

The SCCBA Civil Practice Committee presents an MCLE Seminar:

Ever presented a motion that you thought would be a slam dunk only to be disappointed due to a “technicality”? This program will be devoted to educating family and civil litigation practitioners on how to avoid making common mistakes in law and motion and discovery motions. Both new and veteran practitioners will benefit from tips provided by the bench and practitioners to convince the judge to say “yes” to your motion. Actual tentative rulings will be used as examples of what not to do. Case managers also have provided their input to encourage a discussion on good practices and what traps to avoid. This two hour program will cover a variety of motions: Demurrers/Motions to Strike; Motions for Judgment on the Pleadings/Summary Judgments; Motions for Reconsideration; Motions to Withdrawal; and discovery motions. Panelists will also discuss common mistakes associated with declarations, objections, and requests for judicial notice.
