Description

 

This course is designed to provide the participants with an overview of civility guidelines, including the California Attorney Guidelines of Civility and Professionalism, and to discuss the issues of civility in the context of pretrial and trial litigation.  Judge Wiley and Judge Darwin will discuss societal and legal changes that have impacted civility and professionalism in the legal profession and also will provide suggestions on how to address these issues and ensure that attorney conduct does not impact the goal of zealous advocacy or prejudice a client’s case. 

 

Faculty

 

Hon. Richard C. Darwin

Judge Richard C. Darwin was appointed by Governor Brown to the San Francisco Superior Court in December of 2017. Judge Darwin presides in family court.  Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Darwin was a Shareholder and Co-Chair of the Buchalter Group’s Litigation Practice Group. As an attorney, Judge Darwin developed a complex civil litigation practice with an emphasis on misappropriation of trade secrets, copyright infringement, and license disputes.  Judge Darwin litigated actions in state and federal court in the biotechnology and software development industries, among many others.  Judge Darwin is a member of the San Francisco Bar Association, the San Francisco Bank Attorneys Association, and the Standing Committee on Trade Secrets of the California State Bar Association. He is a past member of the Executive Committee of the Federal Bar Association, Northern District of California, and is a Master of the Bench in the Edward J. McFetridge Inn of Court. 
Judge Darwin volunteers at Larkin Street Youth Services, which provides essential services to homeless and at-risk teenagers and young adults in San Francisco. He is also a senior member of The Guardsmen, a non-profit organization that helps send disadvantaged and at-risk Bay Area children to school and summer camp.

 

Hon. Monica Wiley

The Honorable Monica F. Wiley was appointed to the San Francisco Superior Court in 2009, and is the second African American female appointed to the San Francisco bench.  Judge Wiley is currently the Supervising Judge of the Unified Family Court.  Judge Wiley also serves as faculty for the California Center for Judicial Education, and teaches Advanced Trial Advocacy at Hastings College of the Law.  
Judge Wiley served as a Deputy City Attorney in the San Francisco City Attorney's Office for over ten years and was lead trial counsel in 27 jury trials both in state and federal court.  Then, in private practice, Judge Wiley handled catastrophic personal injury and bad faith insurance claims for individual and corporate defendants at the law firm of Carlson, Calladine & Peterson LLP in San Francisco.
Judge Wiley earned her J.D., Cum Laude, from Howard University School of Law and her bachelor’s degree in Political Economies of Industrial Societies from the University of California at Berkeley.  
Judge Wiley is a member of the California Judge’s Association, the American Judge’s Association, the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation, Black Women Lawyers of Northern California, and is a lifetime member of the Charles Houston Bar Association.
