SPEAKERS

Jennifer Anderson (Moderator) is a paralegal with The Veen Firm on the Leary Trial Team. Ms. Anderson has almost seven years of legal experience in personal injury and mass torts, including discovery, trial, hearings, mediation/settlement, motions, and pleadings. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Nicole E. Forde is an employment litigation associate with Jackson Lewis P.C. Her practice focuses exclusively on representing management and business owners in employment matters. She has extensive experience litigating individual harassment and discrimination matters as well as class actions alleging wage and hour violations. Ms. Forde also provides ongoing advice and counsel to her clients to ensure constant compliance and to prevent future liability. Much of her advice and counsel work consists of pro bono assistance to non-profit organizations.

Alexandra A. Hamilton is an attorney with The Veen Firm on the Leary Trial Team. She handles complex cases involving catastrophic injuries or death, including products liability, workplace injuries, dangerous conditions of property, and vehicle negligence. Ms. Hamilton has been recognized as one of the top young litigators in California. She has been named Top 40 Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers Association, Top 10 Under 40 in California by the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys, and Top Ten Best Female Attorneys by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys. Since 2014, she has been selected as a Rising Star by Northern California Super Lawyers.

Aron K. Liang is an attorney with Philip M. Andersen & Associates. He handles a wide variety of personal injury cases and has significant trial and arbitration experience in federal court, state court and other dispute resolution forums. Mr. Liang has been a member of the California State Bar since 2003 and has tried several jury trials to verdict. Mr. Liang has been recognized as a Northern California Super Lawyer Rising Star. for the elderly. She has achieved successful results for plaintiffs in mediations and trial throughout California. Although the Osage Nation had been forced from their ancestral lands by the U.S. government, through shrewd and careful bargaining, they retained the mineral rights to one of the richest oil fields in the world: Osage County, Oklahoma.

But the wealth of the Osage Nation, instead of insuring the prosperity and safety of the tribe, made its members targets for what was later known as the Reign of Terror. The task of solving dozens of murders fell in the 1920s to the newly formed FBI and its young director, J. Edgar Hoover.

In this episode of the Modern Law Library, author David Grann tells the ABA Journal’s Lee Rawles how he learned of this series of murders and decided to write Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. He also discusses the brave Osage woman at the heart of his story, Mollie Burkhart, who defied the local white-dominated power structure to find who was responsible for the deaths of her family members.

He is the author of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. His first book, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, has been adapted into a major motion picture that was released in April 2017. He was awarded a Silver Gavel for the 2009 article “Trial by Fire,” which examined how debunked arson science led to the execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in Texas. Those practicing in the field of elder law, or with elderly clients or family members, should understand basic advocacy issues in skilled nursing facilities.

People “voluntarily” accept the end of therapy and discharge from facilities because they don’t know their rights. “We are discharging your Dad tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.,” or “Medicare will not pay for any more therapy,” or “We don’t have any “custodial beds” or “we have a long waiting list for Medi-Cal beds” are only a few of the statements that cause people to “voluntarily” stop therapy or accept discharge.  None of these are lawful reasons for mandatory discharge.  Who knew they had options?  Perhaps you can.  Learn about your client’s right to care and treatment, and how they can assert these rights under the law and get the care they need, and perhaps benefits to pay for it.

Helping a client qualify for Long Term Care Medi-Cal or other benefits profits them little if they are quickly, and inappropriately, discharged or transferred.

Understanding their rights can help your clients radically change their health care outcomes.  We will look at common scenarios, your options, and provide you with the underlying supporting legal authority.  These tips are particularly helpful for Elder Law practitioners, but useful for anyone with friend or family who may require long term care.

Low-Income Landlord Eviction Assistance Clinic Volunteer Training

 

Please join the Volunteer Legal Services Corporation for this two-part training on how to handle an unlawful detainer action from client intake through trial. Topics include: termination of tenancy notices in Alameda County jurisdictions and the process of basic unlawful detainer actions from start to finish.

VLSC administers a weekly clinic in Hayward to assist low-income landlords with non-payment of rent eviction matters. Our low-income landlord clients are generally elderly individuals or those relying on rental income to remain housed themselves. All VLSC clients are screened for income eligibility.

 

*Cost: $0, with volunteer commitment

TO ATTEND: Participants must attend both sessions and commit to volunteering at the VLSC Low-Income Landlord Eviction Assistance Clinic in Hayward six times in the next year.
