Electronic Real Estate Transactions - What Works? What Doesn't? This lunchtime seminar will review the rise of electronic real estate transactions and include discussion of the pros and cons to such transactions; a review of the service providers in the industry; and what real estate professionals can anticipate in the future.   Light lunch provided.   Cost: FREE for ACBA Members $115 for Non Members Please note: there will be a $10 administrative fee if you cannot make the program, and do not cancel in advance. Song, Realtor Eric Song is a residential and commercial real estate broker working in the San Francisco Bay Area and has transacted a volume of sales through utilizing electronic providers. In a day and age where often buyer and seller never meet, the electronic sales transaction presents novel questions for its participants their representatives, all of which will be considered at this seminar.   Kevin R. Martin, Martin Law Office, S.C. Kevin Martin is a practicing attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area with over 20 years experience handling real estate transaction and litigation matters for his clients. Mr. Martin has experience with electronic transaction issues and will provide a legal perspective to the discussion.

The Silicon Valley USPTO hosts an interactive question and answer session with the Trademark Assistance Center (TAC).  During this virtual meeting with TAC, participants will learn about the trademark registration process and be able to ask questions of experts through our video teleconferencing capability.  The Trademark Assistance Center, located in Alexandria, Virginia, provides general information about trademarks. 

 

This event is intended for individuals with a beginning to intermediate level of knowledge of trademarks.  To get the most out of this event, we recommend participants view some of the informational videos regarding trademark registration (www.uspto.gov/trademark) before the session and prepare specific questions to ask the experts.

As part of its Patents Education Curriculum, the Silicon Valley USPTO will host a two-hour workshop on patent searching. Learn to search databases used by patent examiners on the USPTO Universal Public Workstations (UPWS) which are publicly available at the regional office.  A supervisory patent examiner will instruct the attendees on the following:

• What are the benefits of searching?
• Where can you search?
• When should you search?
• How do you search using USPTO search tools?

This session is designed for inventors, entrepreneurs, and those who have a beginning to intermediate knowledge of patents and would like to learn more about patent searching.

 

If you do not already have a UPWS login account which are valid for one year, please arrive approximately 30 minutes before the workshop to register for one.  Most of the class will be lecture; however, you will have the opportunity to practice on our Universal Public Workstations during the last 30-45 minutes. We have limited availability for the workstations so you may want to allow extra time after class to use a workstation.

Richard Rothstein spent years studying why schools remained de facto segregated after Brown v. Board of Education. He came to believe that the problem of segregated schools could not be solved until the problem of segregated neighborhoods was addressed—and that neighborhoods were de jure segregated, not de facto.

In this episode of the Modern Law Library, the ABA Journal’s Lee Rawles speaks to Rothstein about his new book, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America.

 

Rothstein says that federal, state and local governments passed laws and created policies that promoted racial discrimination in housing and destroyed previously integrated neighborhoods. In this interview, Rothstein discusses his findings and proposes remedies to rectify the injustices experienced by generations of African-Americans.
