    Ms. Carrillo is an experienced trial lawyer who has handled every kind of criminal case. Driving under the influence, domestic violence, gang violence, and murder are just a few areas she has specialized in. Starting out in the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Ms. Carrillo handled a high volume caseload and quickly established herself as an aggressive trial lawyer. She was awarded misdemeanor and felony trial prosecutor of the year in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

     

    In 2008, Ms. Carrillo moved to Sonoma County where she gained additional experience in handling murder cases, marijuana and drug cases, domestic violence, and juvenile matters. In 2010, she was awarded trial advocate of the year. Over her career so far, she has successfully handled a large volume of complex and high profile criminal matters.

     

    A graduate of the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Ms. Carrillo specialized in “advocacy and competed in mock trial competitions. A fierce competitor in the courtroom, she developed a “love” for the courtroom before she officially started trying cases. She also gained valuable civil litigation experience working for the 14th largest law firm in Sacramento for five years, while attending college and law school at night.

She is admitted to practice in California, the Federal District Court, Northern District, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C. Ms. Bull is a member of the California and Sonoma County Bar Associations and the American Inns of Court. She also volunteers as a small claims judge pro tem in Sonoma County, is a member of the Appellate Division-Best Practices Committee, and is president of the Board of Directors of Kid Street Learning Center LLC, a public charter school.

    After graduating from UC Hastings in 2011, Ms. Gates worked for two years as a Deputy Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the California Department of Justice, where she drafted respondent’s briefs in appeals from felony convictions and responded to petitions for writs of habeas corpus. She then spent two and half years as an associate with the law firm of Archer Norris in Walnut Creek, where her practice focused primarily on civil appeals and writs. Ms. Gates has since opened her own practice, where she continues to handle appeals and writs in both criminal and civil cases. Ms. Gates is also an adjunct professor at UC Hastings, where she teaches Legal Writing and Research, as well as Moot Court. In addition, Ms. Gates serves as a supervising attorney with the Hastings Appellate Project, which allows third-year law students to undertake representation of actual clients before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

    Ms. Espinoza is a Sonoma County Deputy Public Defender who specializes in those issues that arise from the intersection of criminal and immigration law (Crim Imm). Ms. Espinoza advises fellow Public Defenders on how best to represent their clients with regard to the immigration consequences of their pleas and charges while carrying a criminal defense caseload. Previously, Ms. Espinoza worked in the Riverside County Public Defender’s officer for 7 years, where she created and oversaw the Crim Imm program. Ms. Espinoza graduated with her law degree from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall. As a student, she participated in the California Asylum Representation Clinic (CARC) providing representation at all stages of asylum application process for refugees and worked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF).

    Mr. Zimmerman has been working solely in Family Law since 1991 when he opened his private practice in Petaluma. Prior to his move to Sonoma County, his practice comprised of a mix of landlord-tenant, personal injury, criminal defense, and family law. Mr. Zimmerman was admitted to practice in 1979, having graduated from USF Law School in 1978. Prior to law school, Mr. Zimmerman worked as a paralegal for Contra Costa Legal Services, 1972-1975, as “alternate service” for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War. During that interval, he was substantially involved in researching and drafting for ultimately successful effort to obtain appointed counsel in certain civil cases, see Salas v. Cortez (1979), 24 Cal.3d 22 (since superseded by statute, Cal.Fam.C. § 7630).

    Entrance

    The library entrance is at the front of the building, at 1145 Market Street, between 7th and 8th. Enter on the south side of Market—on the right when facing the Ferry Building. The library is on the fourth floor. The back of the building is on Stevenson Street.

     

    Parking

    The Soma Grand Garage is at 1160 Mission Street. The garage also has an entrance on Stevenson Street. The best way to enter the garage is from Mission Street.

     

    BART and MUNI

    From BART or MUNI underground, use the Civic Center Station. Exit B3 from the station is the closest to the library entrance. Other exits from the station are to UN Plaza (across Market Street) 7th Street, and 8th Street. There is an elevator to the station directly across from the library on Market Street.

    Mrs. Nasiri has extensive experience with all types of immigration and deportation defense matters. She has conducted know-your-rights presentations on a variety of legal issues affecting immigrant groups at the West County Detention Center in Richmond, California and Yuba County Detention Facility in Marysville, California. Mrs. Nasiri assists clients with a wide variety of immigration matters, including applications with the consulates and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, representing clients detained by the Department of Homeland Security, defending immigrants in removal proceedings in Immigration Court, and representing clients in criminal immigration proceedings in federal court. She currently serves as President of the Counsel on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) for the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.

    What Every Practitioner Needs to Know about Elder Abuse

    At some point in their career, regardless of area of practice, every practitioner will find themselves in a situation where they believe an elder is being taken advantage of or abused. It can be difficult to know where to turn to get help for that elder, especially when you are unsure of the situation. This program will focus on giving practical tools and tips for when you suspect an elder is being abused physically, emotionally, financially or neglected. We will also cover the basics of the remedies and protections available in probate and civil court.

    Before his recent transition to Executive Director, James Treggiari was a senior staff attorney at Legal Assistance for Seniors since 2014 and a staff attorney since 2009. His primary areas of focus were elder abuse and conservatorship. He is a 2008 graduate of Golden Gate University Law School in San Francisco and worked as a social worker in Los Angeles and New Hampshire before law school. He also holds a master’s degree in social work from UCLA. James is excited to continue to serve the senior community in Alameda County in his new role as Executive Director of LAS.
